The diamond was buzzing in Jamestown on Thursday as third-seeded Southwest Guilford pulled off a stunning 2-1 upset over top-seeded Grimsley to claim the Metro 6A/7A Conference baseball tournament championship at Ragsdale. The Cowboys (17-9) struck early, plating single runs in the first and third innings to build a 2-0 lead. Brendan Snider, Connor Kennedy, and Camden Welch each contributed a hit, while Andrew Barefoot drove in a crucial run. On the mound, Kaden Morgan was nothing short of spectacular, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts while scattering just four hits and two walks.
Over in Kernersville, the Piedmont Triad 5A/6A Conference baseball championship delivered edge-of-your-seat drama as top-seeded Oak Grove edged second-seeded North Davidson 4-3 at Glenn. Addison Terry doubled and drove in two runs, while Cam Sharpe also notched two RBIs for the Grizzlies (17-7). Carson Everhart added two hits of his own, and the pitching duo of Cooper Hunt (four innings) and Everhart (three innings) each fanned four batters to lock down the win.
In Greensboro, Westchester Country Day showcased their firepower with a 10-3 victory over rival Caldwell in PTAC baseball action. Ashton Pittman led the charge with three hits, including a triple, and an RBI for the Wildcats (16-6, 6-3 conference). Crawford Elrod went deep with a homer and drove in three runs, while Tyler Mangus added a hit and two RBIs. Kaline Burr-Ellis, Cameron Daniel, and Ricky Velez each chipped in a hit and an RBI, and Sawyer Pugh collected two hits. Elrod also earned the win on the mound, striking out eight over six strong innings.
Elsewhere, TW Andrews suffered a tough 15-0 loss to Montgomery Central in PAC Seven 4A/5A baseball, closing the regular season at 1-18 overall and 1-11 in conference play. High Point Central bounced back with a commanding 15-2 win over Lexington, improving to 3-17 overall and 2-10 in the conference.
Switching to the softball diamond, Southwest Guilford capped a memorable day by routing Ragsdale 19-9 in five innings to win the Metro 6A/7A Conference tournament championship. Aniya Harris homered and drove in three runs, while Kaylee Patel doubled and also notched three RBIs for the Cowgirls (14-9), who shared the regular season title with the Tigers. Stevee Kendrick and Michalea Worthington each collected two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Harris also earned the complete-game pitching win. For Ragsdale (19-2), Genesis Edwards had a standout performance with three hits, including a home run and four RBIs, while Gracie Jet Cuthrell added three hits and Ellie Cuthrell had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
Finally, High Point Christian made quick work of host Calvary Day in PTAC softball, rolling to a 19-0 victory in just three innings. Blakely Bowman blasted a homer and drove in five runs for the Cougars (18-3, 4-0 conference), while Landyn Smith and Lillie Taylor also contributed to the offensive explosion.
