The Seaside Seagulls boys golf team is finding its championship form, posting their lowest score of the season in a promising display. Meanwhile, on the baseball diamonds, Warrenton and Knappa secured key league wins, and Astoria handled a non-league opponent. In softball, Astoria and Seaside began league play with tough losses, while the Warrenton girls team geared up for a pivotal showdown with Banks for league supremacy.
For the front nine at Gearhart Golf Links, the Seaside Seagulls looked every bit like the team that shot a 315 to win the state title last year. They were on a blistering pace, projected for a 314, before settling for a still-impressive season-best 329 to defeat Tillamook by 31 strokes. This performance signals a team reloading with serious potential.
Senior leader Xanh Quang led the charge with his best round of the season, a stellar 73, staying under par from his opening birdie until the final putt. Freshman Will Haag announced his arrival by breaking into the 70s for the first time, carding a 78. The team's depth shone through as Dexter Jenks, recently promoted to varsity, contributed an 88, and Landon Nofield's strong front-nine 41 helped secure the victory.
Head coach Jim Poetsch praised his squad's daily improvement and their high ceiling. "We are getting better every day and today were some glimpses of how good this team can be," Poetsch said. He highlighted the challenging aerated greens and the intense internal competition for varsity spots, stating, "As soon as we get a few of them to consistently score in the 80s, we will be a team to be reckoned with." The Seagulls look ahead to their next Cowapa League match against Scappoose.
Shifting to baseball, the Warrenton Warriors quickly rebounded with authority, securing two decisive league wins. They topped Neah-Kah-Nie 11-5, powered by multi-hit games from Hunter Perrigo, RJ Thornton, and Thomas DeJesus. The Warriors' offense exploded again on Thursday, unleashing a 20-run barrage in a dominant 20-3 victory over Valley Catholic, with Aaron Neahring leading the offensive charge.
