The Warrenton baseball boys had their first league test on Friday night, Seaside’s baseball team hosted St. Helens in the Cowapa league home opener, the Astoria boys took on the top ranked team in the state and Knappa baseball topped the charts. In softball play, the Warrenton girls bounced back against Rainier and Knappa’s softball team is moving up the rankings after a solid four game stretch.

The baseball game Friday afternoon at Warrenton High School went a long way towards determining the 3A Coastal Range League Champion.

The Warrenton team and Horizon Christian finished as the top two teams in the 3A Coastal Range League a year ago, and were set for their first matchup of 2026. Due to the rankings and play of the other teams in the league, this game was expected to be the first of two championship fights. Although Banks is also undefeated, the Braves are only ranked 35th in 3A, while Warrenton and Horizon Christian entered Friday as top eight teams.

Friday afternoon played out in predictable fashion. Both teams threw jabs at each other, which were matched. Horizon started things off with two runs in the top of the first. Warrenton would match right away to even things up at two.

Despite both teams having chances to score over the next four innings, the game remained in a 2-2 deadlock. That was until third baseman Drew Bergh stepped to the plate in the sixth inning. The senior proceeded to blast a home run over the left field fence to give the Hawks a 4-2 lead. Junior pitcher Blake Jones got the final six outs of the game to secure the Horizon Christians a 4-2 victory. The win moves Horizon Christian into pole position in the Coastal Range League and moved them up to No. 5 in 3A. The Warrenton team dropped to third behind Horizon Christian and Banks.

RJ Thornton was the offensive standout for Warrenton as he went 2-3 with one run batted in. In total, the Warriors had just four hits. Ryan Palmer was the hard luck loser on the mound as he was doomed by one bad pitch. The junior went six innings, allowed eight total base runners and struck out seven. Eli Neahring had a strong seventh inning on the mound as he retired Horizon Christian in order.

The Warrenton team returned to the diamond on Saturday afternoon against Castle Rock High. The Warriors traveled to Washington for a game against the Rockets.

A strong pitching performance by Jerry Neighbors and Jake Kerker held Warrenton to just one hit over seven innings. The senior duo struck out a combined 12 Warriors batters en route to a 6-0 win.

After the winless weekend, the Warrenton baseball team dropped to 7-6 on the year and now sit No. 10 in the Oregon School Activities Association 3A rankings.

Something special looked to be brewing in Seaside through five innings.

Both Seaside pitcher Kane Israel and St. Helens starter Sawyer Scales had no hitters. The only blemish on either’s score card were three walks from Scales. Those three walks allowed Seaside to take a 1-0 lead going into the sixth inning.

Playing in the Cowapa League home opener, the Seagulls looked to be on the verge of pulling off a great victory. Israel already had one no-hitter on the season and was looking for another one.

But the sixth inning saw everything unravel for Seaside as the Lions scored five runs to take control of the game. St. Helens would score two more in the seventh to give Scales all the help he needed, as the junior went seven innings, struck out 13 and threw 110 pitchers in the Lions 7-1 victory.

The loss extended Seaside’s losing streak to seven games in a row.

Grayson Miller finished with the only hit for Seaside in the loss.

Top-ranked 4A team Scappoose looked the part as the boys took care of business on Saturday afternoon at Tapiola Park.

The state title contenders made quick work of Astoria with an 11-0 five-inning victory. Scappoose exploded for seven runs in the first inning and cruised home behind pitcher Declan Kenny.

Leadoff hitter Sam Schacher had the only hit for Astoria as he singled in the bottom of the first inning. After that no other Fishermen reached base.

The Knappa baseball boys started off league play just like they wanted with a three-game sweep of Vernonia. After taking game one on Monday, the Loggers won a two-game road double-header by scores of 8-1 and 11-0. The result moved Knappa to the top of the Northwest League alongside the team’s closest opponent, Portland Christian.

The 19th-ranked Loggers will host game one of their three game series against the Royals on Tuesday. This series will help determine the winner of the Northwest league at season’s end. With the Loggers currently outside playoff contention via rankings, winning the league will be the easiest way to guarantee another berth in the state playoffs later on this spring.
