Livingston's all-too-brief return to the Scottish Premiership has come to a painful end, as the club was relegated just one season after earning promotion. The final nail in the coffin came when Kilmarnock's decisive 3-0 victory over Dundee United left Marvin Bartley's side 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table with only three games remaining.

It was a season marked by struggle and near-misses. The Lions had briefly reignited their survival hopes with a stunning 2-0 away win against St Mirren last weekend, snapping a staggering 33-game winless streak. That victory was only their second league win of the entire campaign—and their first since August. But the momentum was short-lived.

Friday's hard-fought 2-2 draw against Aberdeen, their sixth tie in nine matches, meant Livingston was forced to pin its hopes on Dundee United pulling off a result at Rugby Park. When that didn't happen, the math became brutally simple. Kilmarnock's win lifted them to 10th place, while Livingston's fate was sealed.

This relegation carries extra sting given the club's recent history. Livingston had been a mainstay in the Scottish Premiership for six consecutive seasons before being relegated two years ago. They bounced back in style, finishing second in the Scottish Championship and then beating Ross County in the Premiership play-off final to reclaim their top-flight status. The hope was that this time, they could build something sustainable.

In a bid to turn the season around, the club made a bold move in February, ending David Martindale's five-year managerial reign. Martindale shifted to sporting director, while assistant Marvin Bartley took the reins. The former Hibernian midfielder brought a newfound resilience—Livingston lost only four of their 11 matches under his guidance—but that lone victory proved too little, too late.

For Bartley and his squad, the focus now shifts to rebuilding. The Lions showed fight in the final stretch, but in the unforgiving world of Scottish football, sometimes fight isn't enough. The challenge ahead is to regroup, reload, and make sure the next return to the Premiership is built to last.
