Liverpool's defensive woes have been a recurring theme this season, with the Reds falling well short of their usual high standards. Arne Slot's side have already suffered 11 Premier League defeats, leaving them in a precarious fourth place—level on points with Aston Villa and six adrift of Manchester United. With just three games remaining, Champions League qualification is far from guaranteed.

Much of the criticism has fallen on the central defensive partnership of Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk, who have started nearly every game together this term. Konate, in particular, has come under fire, with some fans labeling his performances the worst of his Liverpool career. It's no surprise, then, that the club are actively seeking reinforcements at the back this summer.

One name that has emerged as a potential target is AC Milan's Pierre Kalulu. According to a report from Caught Offside, the 23-year-old Frenchman—described as a "leader" at the back—could be available for around €40 million. Juventus, who hold a strong interest in the player, are reportedly willing to sell at that price if Kalulu doesn't agree to a new contract.

Liverpool are not alone in their pursuit, however. Manchester United are also prioritizing a defensive signing this summer, making the race for Kalulu a two-horse race. For the Reds, securing a reliable centre-back could be the key to shoring up a backline that has been anything but solid this season. Whether they can beat their Premier League rivals to the punch remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Anfield needs a defensive leader, and the asking price is now on the table.
