Liverpool are gearing up for a defensive shake-up this summer, with the club reportedly set to intensify their pursuit of Sporting CP's Gonçalo Inácio as a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. The Reds face growing uncertainty in their centre-back ranks, and while they've already secured the signing of Jeremy Jacquet and anticipate Giovanni Leoni's return from injury, there's still a pressing need to bolster both quality and depth in that area.
With Van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out of contract in 2027, speculation is mounting that Gomez could be sold this summer. Add to that the unresolved contract situation for Ibrahima Konaté, who has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, and it's easy to see why sporting director Richard Hughes might be prioritizing a centre-back arrival. Enter Gonçalo Inácio, a 24-year-old Portugal international who has been turning heads across Europe.
According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool are strong admirers of the left-footed defender, who boasts a very reasonable €60 million release clause in his contract, which runs until 2030. Inácio is seen as an ideal fit for the Reds, particularly given the need for a left-sided centre-back to eventually take over from Van Dijk. The idea would be to bring him in this summer, allowing him a year to settle before stepping into the Dutchman's shoes.
"Liverpool are also admirers of Inácio, who is a left-sided centre-back," the report notes. "There aren't many top ones available, but he is one of them, for sure. They're going to have to replace Virgil van Dijk sooner rather than later, and Inácio could be an ideal replacement, as he can play on the left side of that central defence. He's got good pedigree at international level and has played Champions League football as well."
Inácio, a product of Sporting's academy, made his senior debut in 2020 and has already racked up over 200 appearances for the club. A regular for Portugal, he's widely regarded as one of Europe's finest ball-playing defenders in his age group. Primarily a left centre-back, he can also cover at left-back or in a defensive midfield pivot role, bringing versatility and composure to the backline. His anticipation and technical ability make him a standout prospect—and potentially the perfect piece to anchor Liverpool's defence for years to come.
