Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, are facing a tough decision that's all too familiar: stick with head coach Arne Slot or make a change. As the reigning Premier League champions slide down the table and fan frustration grows louder, FSG must weigh their next move carefully.
Slot, who led Liverpool to the title last season, has lost the support of many fans. Former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC Sport he expects the Dutchman to be gone within months. The atmosphere at Anfield turned toxic during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea, with dissent echoing through the stands.
This isn't new territory for FSG. Back in 2015, they faced a similar crossroads with Brendan Rodgers. After nearly winning the league in 2014, Rodgers saw his team collapse to a sixth-place finish, capped by a humiliating 6-1 loss at Stoke City. FSG initially kept faith, backing him with big signings like Christian Benteke (£32.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£29m), while selling Raheem Sterling for £49m. But the gamble failed—Rodgers was sacked in October, replaced by Jurgen Klopp. That decision sparked a golden era: a Champions League title in 2019 and a long-awaited Premier League crown in 2020.
Now, history is repeating itself. Slot was backed with a massive £450m transfer outlay last summer, but results have nosedived. There are no signs FSG are ready to pull the trigger, but the noise from the Kop is impossible to ignore. Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is already being whispered as a potential successor.
For FSG, the question remains: do they double down on Slot or start fresh? The answer could define Liverpool's next chapter.
