But Bakersfield's Sawyer Sparks is changing that image in a big way—with high-energy, sprinting, and darting moves across the diamond that have made him an internet sensation.

It all started when parent Justin Ritchie filmed Sparks's wildly animated umpiring during a local game. Ritchie originally captured the footage to share with his wife, who couldn't make it to their son's game. "I was texting her, and she was asking about the game and how our son was doing. I told her that he's not up yet, but this umpire, he's really killing it out there," Ritchie told FOX58.

After posting a clip on Instagram, the internet quickly took notice. By Friday, the video had racked up an impressive 126,000 likes, with viewers captivated by Sparks's commitment to getting every call right. "The next day, just the views and comments and messages I've been getting from this kid, I was like—amazing!" Ritchie recalled.

For Sparks, those dramatic moves serve a serious purpose. "The reason why I run around the field is, since I'm the only umpire on the field, I want to make sure I get the most accurate calls as possible," he explained. It's a lesson in hustle and precision that any young athlete—or weekend warrior—can appreciate.

Following his viral rise, Sparks finally met Ritchie in person to thank him. "I went ahead and met Justin, and I just told him, hey, this is me, thank you for getting my skills out there and showing everybody what I can do," Sparks said.
