When one of the greatest athletes in history tells you he's genuinely happy to meet you, you know you're having a pretty incredible weekend. That's exactly what happened to Kimi Antonelli at the Miami Grand Prix, where none other than Lionel Messi—Inter Miami's legendary captain—made a surprise appearance trackside.
Before the race even began, the young Mercedes driver had the honor of showing the football icon around his cockpit. But the best was yet to come.
Antonelli didn't just participate in the Miami GP—he dominated it. The 19-year-old phenom secured his third consecutive victory of the season, holding off McLaren's Lando Norris in a race that tested every ounce of his composure. Speaking after the win, a visibly exhausted Antonelli—still sweating through his race suit—met Messi again and could barely contain his emotion: "I'm so happy that I met you! Thank you so much! Thank you so much!"
The race itself was an absolute thriller. With 20 laps remaining on hard compound tires in brutal Florida heat and humidity, Antonelli admitted he was just wishing it was over. The pace was there, but nothing about it was comfortable.
A dramatic start saw Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc battling into Turn 1 before both the Mercedes and Red Bull locked up, sending Verstappen spinning. The lead changed hands multiple times before Antonelli fought his way back to the front, thanks to a perfectly timed pitstop. Mercedes brought him in with Norris trailing by less than two seconds. McLaren responded a lap later, but a quick stop and a blistering out-lap left the two drivers side-by-side at the pit exit. Antonelli used his fresh rubber to seize the moment.
After regaining his composure from the opening chaos, he battled wheel-to-wheel with Leclerc and Norris, managed gearbox concerns with veteran-like maturity, and ultimately took the chequered flag in style.
This victory puts Antonelli in truly legendary company. He's now the first driver in F1 history to win his first three races from his first three pole positions. He joins Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher as the only drivers to take their first three career poles consecutively—and he's the only one of the three to convert all of them into wins.
With 100 points, Antonelli now leads the drivers' standings ahead of his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. And with the GOAT's seal of approval, this kid's star is only rising higher.
