Bayer Leverkusen have renewed the contract of defender Edmond Tapsoba by three years until 2031, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday.

Tapsoba, 27, came to Leverkusen in 2020 from Portugal's Vitoria Guimaraes and was part of the Invincibles team that won the 2024 Bundesliga and German Cup double without s single defeat.

The previous contract of the Burkina Faso international was until 2028.

“Over the past six and a half years, Edmond Tapsoba has become an absolutely key player for our Werkself, one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, performing at the very highest international level,” managing director for sport Simon Rolfes said in a club statement.

"He was a cornerstone of our double-winning team – playing a huge personal part in our success and exerting an extraordinary influence as the link between all parts of the team.

“As one of the most experienced players now, Eddy will continue to lead the way in building a team capable of winning the title once again.”

Tapsoba said it was unusual these days in pro football to play for one club over such a long period but that “Bayer Leverkusen has become something special to me, a second home where I’ve made many friends.

"I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together. I’ve had some wonderful experiences here and been able to celebrate some fantastic titles. That’s exactly what we’ll be aiming for again in the future,” he said.

Leverkusen had to rebuild their squad after prominent departures such as Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka last summer. They are sixth in the Bundesliga and can still achieve a top four finish to qualify for the Champions League.
