Manchester United's return to action after a 24-day break was anything but triumphant, as they suffered a deflating 2-1 home defeat to Leeds United. The loss marks the first time interim manager Michael Carrick has tasted defeat at Old Trafford, a record undone by a disastrous first half.
The Reds looked every bit a team emerging from a long hiatus, starting the match flat-footed and disjointed. Leeds United exploited this sluggishness ruthlessly, with Noah Okafor striking twice inside the first half-hour. His second, a spectacular volley, was a moment of individual brilliance, but it was facilitated by a passive United defense that failed to settle into the game.
United showed flickers of a response before the break. Bruno Fernandes crafted a couple of chances for Benjamin Sesko, and Amad Diallo forced a save, but the final touch was lacking. They were nearly punished further, saved only by a heroic last-ditch sliding block from Lisandro Martinez to prevent a third Leeds goal just before halftime.
Any momentum from that defensive stand evaporated in the 57th minute. In a bizarre and costly moment, Martinez was shown a straight red card after a VAR review for pulling the ponytail of Leeds' Dominic Calvert-Lewin, an act deemed violent conduct. Reduced to ten men, United's task became monumental.
Remarkably, the sending off seemed to galvanize the home side. Playing with renewed urgency, the ten men fought their way back into the contest. The veteran Casemiro provided a lifeline in the 69th minute, scoring to set up a tense finale and briefly suggesting an improbable comeback was on the cards.
However, the numerical disadvantage ultimately proved too great. While United showed commendable spirit in the latter stages, Leeds managed the game intelligently, and the Reds' brave effort fell short, leaving them to reflect on a costly and chaotic return to Premier League action.
