The Laurel Highlands softball team made a long-awaited return to the WPIAL playoffs on Monday afternoon, and they did so in unforgettable fashion. Playing at Norwin, the Mustangs—seeded No. 6 in the Class 4A tournament—ended a postseason victory drought that dated back to 1999 with a dominant 12-0, five-inning win over 11th-seeded Freeport.
It was the program's first playoff appearance since 2013, and the Mustangs wasted no time making up for lost time. A nine-run explosion in the first inning set the tone, fueled by six hits and five Freeport errors, all with two outs. Sophomore pitcher Payton Senge was the star of the show, tossing a no-hitter while also driving in the eighth and ninth runs of that opening frame. Aubrey Speelman added a two-run single of her own as the bats stayed hot, tacking on single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings.
"When you score nine runs in the first inning, it's going to settle a team down a lot," said Mustangs coach Patrick Livingston. "But the girls also were calm coming into it. They were calm on the bus ride down. Before warm-ups, they were talking about how much they wanted this game and they took it in that first inning."
Laurel Highlands, the runner-up in Section 2 to top-seeded Elizabeth Forward, improved to 11-5 on the season. They now set their sights on a quarterfinal matchup against No. 3 Blackhawk (10-4) on Thursday at a time and location to be determined. "We know that to be the best, you have to beat the best," Livingston added. "We're going to keep rolling forward with Blackhawk the three seed. Hopefully, we come out and play like we did today."
For Freeport, the loss brought a season of resilience to a close at 8-11. The Yellowjackets tied for fourth in Section 1 and fought their way into the postseason, a fact not lost on coach Ron DeJidas. "I know if we had another game to play, they would bounce right back," DeJidas said. "They are a resilient group, and it will serve them well throughout everything they do. This final score was not indicative of what kind of team they are. We just had a few things early in the game that didn't go our way."
As for the Mustangs, the message is clear: after 25 years without a playoff win, they're not done yet. With a no-hitter under their belts and momentum on their side, Laurel Highlands is ready to keep making history.
