The Venice Indians are heading to the Class 7A state championship game, and they did it in dramatic fashion—rallying past Vero Beach 4-2 in a state semifinal that had a little bit of everything. From a run scored on a balk to an umpire giving a pitcher a quick tutorial on how to pitch from the stretch, and even a sacrifice fly caught in foul territory, this game was anything but ordinary.
Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, Venice showed the resilience that has defined their 32-1 season. Beau Daniel sparked the comeback with a one-out double down the left-field line, and pinch-runner Kyle Judson took his place. Then Maddox Volk stepped up and ripped a first-pitch line drive to left field, scoring Judson to tie the game. The Indians weren't done there—they added two more runs to complete the comeback and punch their ticket to the title game.
On the mound, Carter Cox was electric, striking out eight batters and breaking the school's single-season strikeout record in the process. The previous mark, set by Arnold Hughey 25 years ago, fell as Cox's season total climbed to 125. "He's no doubt one of the best pitchers to ever pitch at Venice High School," head coach Craig Faulkner said. "Carter's right there with them, and no one works harder than he does."
The game wasn't without its tense moments. Venice held a 1-0 lead for two and a half innings before a pair of bunts and a defensive miscue turned the tide. With a runner on first, Vero Beach's Nate Downy dropped a bunt past charging third baseman Maddox Volk. Then Dom Lopez pushed another bunt toward third, and Cox's throw to second to try for the lead runner sailed wide, allowing the tying run to score. On the next play, a high fly ball to right field gave Venice's RJ Shields a tough decision—catch it and allow the sacrifice fly, or let it drop and hope for foul territory. He chose to catch it, and Lopez scored to make it 2-1.
But Cox's teammates had his back. After Volk's game-tying hit, the Indians kept the pressure on, adding two more runs to seal the win. Now Venice (32-1) will face the winner of Hagerty and Stoneman Douglas on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Hammond Stadium near Fort Myers for the FHSAA Class 7A Championship. With a record-setting pitcher on the mound and a lineup that never quits, the Indians are ready for the biggest stage of all.
