Lando Norris is finally feeling at home again in his McLaren. After a rocky start to his 2026 Formula 1 title defence, the reigning world champion broke through in Miami Grand Prix sprint qualifying, snatching his first pole of the season and sending a clear message to the competition.

The British driver ended Mercedes' stranglehold on pole positions, outpacing championship leader Kimi Antonelli by two-tenths of a second in a tense one-lap shootout at the Miami International Autodrome. Oscar Piastri completed a strong day for McLaren with third place, while George Russell could only manage a distant sixth in the second Mercedes.

What made the result even sweeter for Norris was how it came together. McLaren brought its first major upgrade package of the season to Miami, and the difference was immediate. "Since lap one, literally turn one, everything felt better," Norris said. "I felt a little bit more like last year, with just having some confidence in the car."

That confidence was the foundation of Norris's championship-winning 2025 campaign, but it had been missing in the early rounds of 2026. The upgrades appear to have restored the connection between driver and machine that made him so formidable last season. "I feel like I've exploited that through the whole day today, so it's a nice start to the weekend," he added. "Probably better than we were expecting, honestly."

The timing couldn't be better. While Mercedes left time on the table with overheating tyres and an energy deployment strategy that fell short of their customer team's execution, the Silver Arrows showed superior long-run pace in practice. Ferrari also looked slightly ahead of McLaren over race distance, meaning the fight is far from over.

With parc ferme opening again after the 19-lap sprint, Mercedes has a chance to reset and strike back in grand prix qualifying. But for now, Norris and McLaren have the momentum—and more importantly, the confidence—to remind everyone why they're the reigning champions.
