An era in Tennessee high school basketball has come to a close. Lamar Rogers, the all-time winningest coach in TSSAA girls basketball history, has resigned from Clarkrange High School after an incredible 50-year tenure at his alma mater.
Rogers's legacy is one of pure dominance and longevity. His final record stands at a staggering 1,364 wins against just 350 losses, a testament to a career built on consistency and excellence. Under his leadership, the Clarkrange Buffaloes became a powerhouse, capturing eight state championships, finishing as runners-up three times, and qualifying for the state tournament an impressive 26 times. Remarkably, he presided over only one losing season in five decades.
His impact was felt from the very beginning. Clarkrange first burst onto the state scene in 1983, qualifying for its inaugural TSSAA state tournament. Rogers fondly recalled the moment his team announced its arrival, with fans proudly displaying a sign that read, "Now you've heard of Clarkrange." From that point forward, thanks to Rogers, everyone in Tennessee girls basketball certainly had.
Inducted into both the TSSAA and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Halls of Fame, Rogers's resignation marks the end of a defining chapter for the sport in the state. His half-century of dedication not only built a legendary program but also inspired countless young athletes, embodying the commitment and competitive spirit that defines the very best of high school sports.
