Lakers star Luka Doncic breaks silence; says he's unlikely to play in series

Hamstring injury is severe enough to keep him out of action for a few more weeks, and it was obvious in a Game 1 loss to the Thunder that the Lakers miss his playmaking.

The Lakers are facing an uphill battle in their Western Conference semifinals series against the Thunder, and the biggest reason just broke his silence: Luka Doncic has confirmed he's unlikely to return for the remainder of the playoffs.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since limping off the court in Oklahoma City on April 2, Doncic revealed that his left hamstring injury is more severe than anything he's dealt with before. The Grade 2 strain—a setback to the same area he injured earlier this season—has kept him from progressing beyond light running. He hasn't yet participated in on-court contact drills.

"It's very frustrating," Doncic said. "I don't think people understand how frustrating it is. All I want to do is play basketball, especially at this time. It's the best time to play basketball."

The initial recovery timeline was eight weeks, and Doncic said doctors told him roughly two months of rest would be needed. To speed things along, he traveled to Spain for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, receiving four total with four-day breaks between each. He stayed in Spain for about two weeks to complete the treatment.

The Lakers already felt his absence in Game 1 of the series, falling 108-90 to the defending champion Thunder on Tuesday. Without their leading scorer and primary playmaker, the offense struggled to find rhythm—a stark reminder of just how much Doncic's court vision and scoring punch mean to the team.

Los Angeles did manage to grind through a six-game first-round series against the Houston Rockets, but that came with its own challenges. Three of those games were played without Austin Reaves, who was injured in the same contest that sidelined Doncic.

For Doncic, watching from the sidelines has been the toughest part. "Seeing what my team is doing, I'm very proud of them. It's been very tough just to see and watch them play," he said.

As the Lakers look to even the series, the reality is setting in: they'll have to do it without their superstar—and likely for the rest of the postseason.
