LeBron James is keeping the basketball world guessing about his next move. After the Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, the NBA legend admitted he's uncertain about his future—including whether he'll return for a record-extending 24th season.

"None of us know what the future holds," James told reporters following the season-ending loss. "I'll take time to recalibrate, look over the season and see what's best for my future. When I get to that point, everyone will know."

In what was a rollercoaster season for the Lakers, James finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists in the final game. For the year, the four-time MVP averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds—solid numbers, but a shift from his usual dominant role. For the first time in his legendary career, James found himself as the third scoring option behind Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, a reality he openly acknowledged as a new challenge.

The Lakers' season was a tale of two halves. They won 53 games—their most since Phil Jackson's final season in 2010-11—but injuries derailed their momentum late, forcing James back into the primary scorer role. The team acquired Dončić five years after winning a championship with Anthony Davis, but the chemistry never fully clicked under postseason pressure.

James, who earned a team-high $52.6 million in 2025-26, is set to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time since 2018. NBA free agency negotiations open June 30, giving him just over a month to decide his next chapter. He cited his injury-triggered hiatus to start the season, moments of self-doubt, and adjusting to a reduced role as factors he'll weigh carefully.

"I don't know what the future holds for me," James said. "It's still fresh from losing. I need to speak to my family—my children and my wife—and consider if I can again commit to the process of preparation."

Whether this is the end of an era or just another chapter in a storied career, one thing is certain: LeBron James will take his time. And when he's ready, the basketball world will be watching.
