At 41 years old, LeBron James remains the oldest active player in the NBA, and retirement rumors have swirled around the Los Angeles Lakers superstar for years. But now, we finally know what's keeping him on the court—and it's all about family.
On Tuesday's episode of the Mind the Game podcast, James opened up about the real reason he's still competing at the highest level: his son, Bronny James.
"To be able to have Bronny in the locker room has definitely helped out a lot," James shared. "I have a job and a responsibility to show him what it means to be a professional and the results that come with it. I have a responsibility in that."
The four-time NBA champion emphasized that while Bronny has watched his father's career from the outside his entire life, being inside the locker room is a completely different experience. "Being in film sessions, being on the plane, being in everything that surrounds how to be a professional—that's where the real lessons happen," James added.
And those lessons couldn't come at a better time. The 21-year-old Bronny, selected as a second-round pick, has struggled to find his offensive rhythm under head coach JJ Redick. The Lakers have sent him to the G League multiple times this season to gain experience and develop his game.
The silver lining? Bronny has arguably the greatest player in NBA history as his personal mentor. From game tips to professional habits, he's getting a masterclass in what it takes to build a lasting career in the league.
Even when LeBron eventually hangs up his sneakers, he made it clear that his role as a father and mentor won't end. "I'll always be there to help him navigate life in this competitive, cutthroat NBA," James said.
For Lakers fans and basketball lovers alike, this father-son story adds a touching layer to LeBron's legendary career—and proves that sometimes, the most powerful motivation comes from the people sitting next to you in the locker room.
