The NBA world is buzzing after a controversial moment in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves. Early in the contest, Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama landed a hard elbow on Timberwolves forward Naz Reid, a play that instantly shifted the series' momentum—and ignited a firestorm of debate.
Wembanyama was assessed a flagrant 2 foul and ejected from the game, but for many, that wasn't enough. ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins didn't mince words on First Take, calling for a suspension. "He looked Naz Reid in the eye and lined him up and hit him with a vicious elbow. That could have caused serious injuries," Perkins said. "If they don't suspend him, it's going to tell fans what the NBA is about—and it can't be about protecting players. It's going to be about money, views, and stardom."
Yet, to the surprise of many, the league decided against any further punishment. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, sources confirmed there will be no suspension and no fine for Wembanyama. He's set to play in Game 5 on Tuesday night in San Antonio.
The decision has sparked outrage online. One fan on X wrote, "I've lost all respect. This is absolutely rigged for money—or ratings, I'm not sure which. Any non-superstar is getting fined with a suspension."
While Spurs fans can breathe a sigh of relief, the debate over star treatment in the NBA is far from over. As the series heads back to San Antonio, all eyes will be on Wembanyama—and on whether the league's decision will fuel even more tension on the court.
