In a thrilling late-game turnaround, Mathias Laborda's 82nd-minute header secured a 1-1 draw for the Vancouver Whitecaps against the LA Galaxy on Saturday night in Carson, California. The moment of magic came from a perfectly executed set piece: Sebastian Berhalter sent a free kick from the left flank to the back post, where Laborda rose to meet it with a point-blank header that leveled the score.
The Whitecaps (8-1-1) entered the match on a historic run—becoming only the second MLS team since 2000 to win eight of their first nine games. However, their club-record four-game regular-season winning streak came to an end against a resilient Galaxy side.
Vancouver dominated possession with 58% control and outshot LA 19-7, including 5-2 in shots on target. Yet it was the Galaxy who struck first. Just seconds into the second half, Lucas Sanabria intercepted a misplayed ball from Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka and fed Joseph Paintsil, who slotted home from the right side of the box in the 46th minute.
Galaxy goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski kept his team in the game with four saves, but couldn't stop Laborda's late equalizer. The result leaves both teams with plenty to build on—Vancouver's early-season dominance remains intact, while LA shows signs of a strong defensive backbone.
