The La Cueva Bears sent a clear message with just 11 days until the state tournament: they're ready to contend. On Thursday, the young but talented squad captured the Albuquerque Metro Championship at Los Altos Golf Course, rallying past Albuquerque Academy on the back nine to secure a three-shot victory.
What makes this win especially impressive? All four of La Cueva's scoring players are underclassmen. With none of them being seniors, the Bears shot a combined 16-over par 304, led by freshman Nixon Knee's medalist-winning round of 1-under 71. Knee carded four birdies against just one bogey and a double, navigating challenging bumpy greens that tested the entire field.
"I think they were all solid. It was a grind today," said La Cueva coach Eric Orell. "There's still some left in the tank for all of us, strokes here and there we need to clean up."
The Bears trailed Academy for much of the round before their putters caught fire down the stretch. The Chargers finished at 307, unable to match La Cueva's closing surge. For a team that lost in a playoff to Volcano Vista at last year's state championship, this comeback victory felt like more than just a regular-season win.
"I think after what happened to us at state last year, our team battles through adversity pretty well," Knee said. "Just for us to lock in and finish strong and execute shots and not worry about everything, helped us."
Academy's Josh James, a senior, took runner-up honors with a 1-over 73 that included four birdies and an eagle — but also a quadruple bogey on his opening hole. Volcano Vista's Isaac Cota, Academy's Russel Hiller, and Thomas Whitten tied for third at 75. La Cueva's A.J. Kozlowski shot 76 for solo sixth, going 1-under over his final eight holes after a tough front nine.
Depth was the Bears' biggest weapon. Ian Pierce tied for ninth with a 78, and Brett Wall added a 79 to round out the scoring. With the District 2-5A tournament in Santa Fe next on the schedule, La Cueva has its sights set squarely on the state championship May 11-12 at New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces.
For a team built around young talent and a chip on their shoulder, this metro crown might just be the first step toward something bigger.
