Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač has fired back at critics questioning his team's playing style this Bundesliga season, making it clear that results matter more than spectacle.
"I ask you: Who – besides Bayern Munich – consistently plays attractive football in the Bundesliga?" Kovač challenged during an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine. "And is attractiveness more important than success? You have to understand that the Bundesliga isn't a theater stage where every performance is the same; it's unpredictable."
The Croatian manager acknowledged that while his side may lack some offensive flair, that's largely due to squad composition rather than tactical choice. "Almost no club offers its fans four goals and spectacular attacking football every week. I think we've certainly shown some very good and attractive football this season," he said.
Kovač pointed to Bayern Munich as the exception that proves the rule. "What we might be lacking a bit is what Bayern have in abundance. They have an incredibly strong squad with many exceptional individual players. This season, they've managed to combine attractiveness with success particularly well. They have scored 113 goals in 31 games – that's extraordinary. Not even the richest clubs in England can currently match that. That has to be acknowledged without envy."
Despite the criticism, Kovač's Dortmund have delivered a strong campaign when looking at the numbers. With a game in hand, BVB boasts the league's fifth-best goals scored tally (65) and the Bundesliga's best defense (31 goals conceded). If they win their final three matches, the squad would match their best points total since the 2018-19 season – a remarkable 76 points.
