Ibrahima Konate was left fuming after a pivotal penalty decision went against Liverpool in their Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain. The defender believes the referee's overturned call was the defining moment that crushed their European dreams.
With the aggregate score at 2-0 to PSG and the second leg at Anfield locked at 0-0, Liverpool were awarded a second-half spot-kick when Alexis Mac Allister went down in the box. However, after a VAR review, referee Maurizio Mariani reversed his decision, leaving the Reds and a stunned Kop in disbelief.
"For me it was a clear penalty," Konate stated after the 4-0 aggregate defeat. "I was just behind the referee but he did not blow the whistle... If we got the penalty and score it would be completely different."
Instead of a potential lifeline, Liverpool were dealt a knockout blow. Unable to recover from the psychological setback, they conceded twice to Ousmane Dembélé, sending the reigning champions through to the semi-finals for the second consecutive season at Liverpool's expense.
Despite the bitter disappointment, Konate found a silver lining in the performance. He argued that Arne Slot's side were the better team on the night, creating numerous chances but failing to find the clinical edge that PSG possessed. "It was a little bit unfair, like last season," he reflected, while acknowledging the French giants have grown even stronger.
With European glory now off the table, the mission is clear for Liverpool: secure a top-five Premier League finish to guarantee a return to the Champions League next season. Konate emphasized that competing in Europe's elite competition is the bare minimum standard for a club of Liverpool's stature. "We have six games left," he urged, "and we have to give our all." The focus now shifts to channeling this frustration into a strong domestic finish, ensuring this season's setbacks fuel a powerful comeback.
