Kirby Smart, the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, recently opened up about the shifting landscape of college football, offering a thoughtful and candid take on why the Big Ten has surged ahead of the SEC. Speaking at the Regions Tradition Pro-Am on Thursday, Smart didn't shy away from addressing the elephant in the room: the Big Ten is the new powerhouse, and the SEC is playing catch-up.
The numbers tell the story. The Big Ten has produced three straight national champions, with the most recent title coming last season. For the first time since 2015, the SEC didn't lead in Day 1 NFL Draft picks—the Big Ten did. It's a stark contrast to the SEC's four-peat from 2019 to 2022, a run that included Smart's own Bulldogs going back-to-back in 2021 and 2022. Now, the conference that once dominated the 21st century is searching for answers.
"I can't figure out what it is," Smart admitted, reflecting on the Big Ten's recent streak. He pointed to a deeper, more competitive conference top-to-bottom. "It used to be, 'Eh, Ohio State is good.' Michigan was really good with [Jim] Harbaugh, they had a great team. Indiana's good. Now they got Oregon. They have a draw. They have the ability to attract good players."
But Smart didn't stop there. He dove into the role of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, which have leveled the playing field. "Now, NIL has a factor, too, for sure. But so does Miami. People have money. More people have money," he explained. "So I think the talent is spread out thin. Where before, in the SEC, it was a magnet to talent. The disparity was so great that it was like you couldn't mess it up, you'd win regardless. And now it's like, 'OK, it's more even.' And it's just been three in a row."
For fans of the game, Smart's comments offer a rare glimpse into the mind of a coach navigating a rapidly evolving sport. The SEC's reign may be on pause, but with leaders like Smart at the helm, the conference is far from done. As the college football world watches closely, one thing is clear: the battle for supremacy is only getting more exciting. Whether you're repping SEC or Big Ten gear, this is a golden era for the sport—and for the apparel that celebrates it.
