In a stunning display of raw talent and composure beyond his years, 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli etched his name into Formula 1 history books on Sunday, May 3, by winning the 2026 Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome. The young Italian driver crossed the finish line with a blistering lap time of 1 minute 27.798 seconds, securing his third consecutive victory from pole position—a feat never before achieved by any F1 driver at the start of their career.

Antonelli’s triumph wasn’t just about speed; it was a masterclass in strategy and execution. After overtaking Lando Norris early in the race, the Mercedes driver held off intense pressure from the pack. Norris ultimately finished second, while Oscar Piastri snatched third with a daring last-lap move on Charles Leclerc. The final order saw George Russell in fourth, Max Verstappen in fifth, and a disappointed Leclerc dropping to sixth.

“The pace was strong. I was able to stay close [to Norris],” Antonelli said on the podium, his voice filled with emotion. “The team did a great strategy. We did a massive undercut and managed to bring it home even though it was not easy. This is just the beginning. The road is still long. We are working super hard, and the team is doing an incredible job. Without them, I wouldn’t be here, so thanks to them and my family. I’m going to enjoy this one, then get back to work.”

The victory caps a meteoric rise for Antonelli, who entered the weekend as the championship favorite after winning the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka in late March—a race that made him the youngest driver ever to lead the Formula 1 World Championship. His Miami win extends that lead, as he continues to defy expectations with every lap.

For context, the F1 calendar took an unexpected pause in April, with the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix canceled due to security concerns. That brief break did nothing to cool Antonelli’s momentum, however. Coming into Miami, he had already established himself as the man to beat, sitting atop the standings ahead of Mercedes teammate George Russell, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

As the checkered flag waved, fans and pundits alike were left marveling at what this young driver has achieved. With a combination of raw speed, tactical brilliance, and a calm demeanor under pressure, Antonelli is proving that the future of Formula 1 is in very capable—and very fast—hands.
