Khamzat Chimaev appears far from finished with Sean Strickland.
After dropping a narrow split decision to Strickland in Saturday's UFC 328 main event—a fight that cost him the middleweight championship—Chimaev took to Twitter with a cryptic message that had fans buzzing. The post, short but loaded with intent, suggests the rivalry is far from over.
Strickland's victory was razor-thin, with two judges scoring it 48-47 in his favor, making him a two-time UFC 185-pound champion—a feat only Israel Adesanya had achieved before him. Despite weeks of intense trash talk leading up to the fight, the two showed mutual respect afterward, with Chimaev even placing the belt around Strickland's waist in a surprising display of sportsmanship.
What Chimaev's tweet actually means remains unclear. UFC CEO Dana White revealed to reporters that Chimaev is considering a move up to light heavyweight, citing the brutal middleweight cut that seemed to take a toll this time around. Even before Saturday's loss, Chimaev had repeatedly expressed interest in chasing gold at 205 pounds.
If Chimaev stays at middleweight, an immediate rematch is certainly possible. But Strickland has a deep pool of challengers waiting, including top contenders Nassourdine Imavov and Brendan Allen—who must first get past Edmen Shahbazyan in June—as well as fresh matchups against rising stars Caio Borralho and Joe Pyfer.
Given Chimaev's tendency for long breaks between fights—he's fought just once a year since 2023—fans may have to wait before getting clarity on his next move. Whether it's a rematch with Strickland or a new chapter at light heavyweight, one thing is certain: the MMA world hasn't heard the last of Khamzat Chimaev.
