
Apr. 23—YANKTON — On the strength of four top-five finishers, the Mitchell High School girls golf team claimed first place at the Yankton Quadrangular on Thursday at Fox Run Golf Course.
Taking individual medalist honors, Maddie Childs shot a 3-over-par 75 to lead the way for the Kernels, with teammate Mia Larson (77) just two strokes back in second place. Mitchell's Anna Eliason (86) and Brynlee Sabers (87) were also fourth and fifth, rounding out the team total of 325 strokes.
Elsewhere for Mitchell, Londyn Hajek (89), Elliot Smith (91) and Presley Meyerink (92) gave the Kernels seven of the top 10 individuals. In total, Mitchell had nine golfers on the course Thursday, and all nine came in under 100. Out of the 34-golfer field, all Mitchell golfers were tied for 15th or better, with Kate Schutz (94) and Emma Reinesch (99) completing the Kernels' contingent.
As a team, Mitchell came in 31 strokes ahead of second-place hosts Yankton (356). The Gazelles were paced by third-place individual Ellia Homstad (84), along with sixth-place Olivia Woods (88) and eighth-place Sabrina Krajewski (90).
Sioux Falls Washington (420) was third, and Harrisburg (428) was fourth in the team standings. The top individual from either team was the Warriors' Corinne Cahill (98), who was 14th overall.
