The first spring of the Will Stein era with the Kentucky Wildcats has come to a close. In the summer we will see Coach Stein take the podium at SEC Media Days, leading into fall camp and next thing you know it will be football time in the bluegrass. Now, let's go position group by position group and project how the team will look this fall. Of course, let's start with the most important position on the field: quarterback.

There is no position battle for the QB1 spot in Lexington, Kenny Minchey has been that guy since Stein signed him out of the transfer portal. At Notre Dame, Minchey never got his chance to be the guy, but head coach Marcus Freeman spoke highly of him and said choosing CJ Carr to be the starter was one of the hardest decisions of his career. Stein has said from talking to coaches he knows at Notre Dame, they were of the belief that they would have had similar success last season if Minchey got the nod over Carr.

Fast forward to now, Carr is currently a betting favorite to win the Heisman trophy on some sports books. Combine that knowledge with the fact every quarterback under Stein has had exceptional production, Minchey could be in for a breakout season. We are looking at a quarterback that could throw for 3,000-plus yards this fall, a mark that hasn't been hit at Kentucky since Mike Hartline did so in 2010. Minchey also has the potential to throw 30-plus touchdown passes, which has only been done four times in a single season in Kentucky football history; Tim Couch did that in 1997 and 1998, and Andre Woodson also hit that threshold in 2006 and 2007.

A lot is riding on Minchey stepping in and being a high level starter. Stein's recent success with the likes of Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel and Dante Moore should give confidence that this is a possibility. Minchey's game seems to translate most to Moore, who was phenomenal for the Oregon Ducks in Stein's offensive scheme. Stein is unbelievable at crafting his offense around his quarterbacks strengths, it is his calling card.

In the limited amount of snaps we have seen out of Minchey from his time at Notre Dame and the Kentucky spring game, we have had a glimpse of his strengths. He seems to play with great timing and understanding of pass concepts. He can play in rhythm and get the ball out quick. Minchey also throws a deep ball with beautiful touch, and we have seen this spring that he can zip it when he needs to as well.

Brennan Ward seems to be a guy that the staff has confidence in. College football teams lack depth at important positions now with the transfer portal era. Ward seems to be the leader as of now to be the backup this fall. Stein can shift the focus in areas of the run game and perimeter screens if Ward has to start.

However, it is hard to imagine Matt Ponatoski not being the backup; that is if he makes it to campus... Ponatoski has a legitimate shot to be drafted in the first two rounds of the MLB draft and will be forced to make a decision soon. He has an incredible arm, and being a high level pitcher allows him to throw the football from multiple arm angles. Overall, this is a solid quarterback room with a ton of upside heading into the 2026 football season.
