Pittsburgh's ECHL affiliate was able to fend off the Maine Mariners to take Game 1 of their best-of-seven second-round series.

The Wheeling Nailers, the ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are proving that playoff hockey is all about finding a way to win—even when the path gets bumpy. After a dominant first-round series against the Reading Royals, where goaltender Taylor Gauthier posted three shutouts, the Nailers faced a much stiffer test in Game 1 of the North Division Final against the Maine Mariners. But true to their resilient form, they answered the bell in dramatic fashion.

In a back-and-forth thriller at WesBanco Arena, the Nailers erased multiple deficits before forward Ryan McAllister played hero in overtime. Taking a crisp pass from Brayden Edwards off the rush, McAllister unleashed a sniper’s shot from the left circle, beating Mariners goaltender Brad Arvantis to seal a 4-3 victory. The overtime winner sent the home crowd into a frenzy and gave Wheeling a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Nailers’ offense came from all corners, with defenseman Tristan Thompson, forward Blake Bennett, and forward Mike Posma each finding the back of the net. Gauthier, meanwhile, stood tall between the pipes, turning aside 27 of 30 shots to keep his team in the fight. Key contributors like forward Logan Pietila and defenseman Brent Johnson added two points apiece, showcasing the depth that has made Wheeling a formidable postseason contender.

This series win would punch the Nailers’ ticket to the Conference Final, where they would face the winner of the South Division series between the Florida Everblades and the South Carolina Stingrays. It’s a tantalizing prospect for a team that has already shown it can handle pressure. During the regular season, the Nailers and Mariners played to a tie, but Wheeling came out on the wrong end in penalty minutes—a small footnote that now feels like distant history.

Game 2 is set for Saturday at 7:10 p.m. ET, once again at WesBanco Arena. If Game 1 was any indication, fans are in for another edge-of-your-seat showdown. For the Nailers, the mantra is simple: stay calm, stay focused, and keep finding ways to win.
