When the New Orleans Saints used a sixth-round pick on Barion Brown in the 2026 NFL Draft, it raised a few eyebrows. But after rookie minicamp, head coach Kellen Moore made it clear the former LSU Tiger and Kentucky Wildcat is more than just a special teams specialist.

"Yeah, he's a receiver as well," Moore said during Friday's press conference. "And I think that's the important asset that we view this as. We're onboarding a guy who's a returner and a receiver. It's not going to be just one thing."

Brown's resume certainly backs that up. The speedster led the FBS in yards per kick return in 2023 at Kentucky and topped the SEC in the same category in 2025 after transferring to LSU. Over four seasons, he racked up six kick return touchdowns and averaged an eye-popping 29.4 yards per return. That kind of explosiveness is hard to ignore, especially in today's NFL where field position can swing a game.

But Moore sees a bigger role. Brown's 175 career receptions for 2,060 yards and 12 touchdowns show he can produce against elite competition. He's also shown versatility in the run game, averaging 7.1 yards per carry on limited opportunities. That combination of skills makes him a weapon defenses have to account for on every snap.

"He's had a lot of success both in the return game and the receiver game," Moore added. "We spent a lot of time with him. He came in on a 30 visit. We're excited to add him to that mix."

For Saints fans, Brown represents exactly the kind of dynamic playmaker the league is gravitating toward. Whether he's taking a jet sweep, lining up in the slot, or waiting for a kickoff, his ability to change the game in an instant is what made him a draft target. The question isn't whether he'll make the team, but how creative Moore and the coaching staff will get in finding ways to get him the ball.
