When Texas softball needed a hero against archrival Oklahoma last weekend, Katie Stewart delivered. Her extra-inning, game-winning home run in Sunday's series finale wasn't just a clutch moment; it was the exclamation point on a season that has transformed her into one of the nation's most feared hitters. Now, head coach Mike White is making a strategic lineup shift to ensure his red-hot slugger gets even more opportunities to swing the bat.

For most of the season, Stewart has anchored the cleanup spot, batting behind All-American powerhouse Reese Atwood. But in the final two games against the Sooners, White moved the junior up to the crucial No. 2 spot in the order, right behind leadoff hitter Kayden Henry. This isn't a temporary experiment. White confirmed the change is likely here to stay as the No. 5 Longhorns (33-6, 10-5 SEC) head into a pivotal road series against the No. 15 Georgia Bulldogs.

"Katie Stewart has just been so consistent this year that we really need to have more at-bats and have her come up more times in the lineup," White explained. The numbers back up his decision emphatically. Stewart isn't just having a good year; she's putting together an All-American campaign, leading Texas in virtually every major offensive category: a staggering .490 batting average, a 1.163 slugging percentage, a .609 on-base percentage, 51 RBIs, and 22 home runs.

The logic behind the move is sound baseball strategy. "We had her at fifth, really to protect Reese," White said, referring to the traditional practice of placing strong hitters behind your best batter to discourage intentional walks. "But I think that now, Katie's kind of the one that needs protecting." By batting Stewart second, she's guaranteed to see more plate appearances over the course of a game and a series, maximizing the impact of her historic offensive production.

White also indicated his pitching rotation will remain steady against a potent Georgia lineup (31-11, 9-6 SEC) that ranks among the conference's best, setting the stage for a high-stakes SEC showdown. The series kicks off this Saturday at 3 p.m. in Athens, a crucial test for a Texas team fine-tuning its lineup for a deep postseason run, with Stewart now positioned front and center to lead the charge.
