Kansas City Royals’ Seth Lugo Reaches Career Milestone in 11th MLB Season

The Royals veteran is making history.

Kansas City Royals right-hander Seth Lugo has quietly been one of baseball's most versatile arms over the past decade, and in his 11th MLB season, he's finally reached a career milestone that puts him in elite company. On Wednesday, Lugo fanned Tristan Peters in the bottom of the fourth inning to record his 1,000th career strikeout, becoming just the 46th active pitcher to achieve that mark.

What makes this milestone even more impressive is the path Lugo took to get there. Unlike most pitchers who rack up strikeouts as full-time starters, Lugo has spent the majority of his career shuttling between the rotation and the bullpen. Of his 369 career appearances, only 132 have been starts. That means he's faced far fewer batters than most pitchers who reach 1,000 strikeouts, making the achievement a testament to his consistency and durability.

Lugo's journey to this point has been anything but linear. After spending his early years with the New York Mets primarily as a reliever—he hadn't started more than seven games in a season since 2017—he returned to the rotation in 2023 with the San Diego Padres and posted a solid 3.57 ERA over 26 starts. That performance set the stage for what would become the best season of his career.

When Lugo signed with the Royals in 2024, he took his game to another level. Starting 33 games, he posted a sparkling 3.00 ERA across 206.2 innings, striking out 181 batters with a 1.08 WHIP. That dominant campaign earned him his first All-Star selection, a runner-up finish in Cy Young Award voting, and even down-ballot MVP votes that landed him 15th in the American League. For good measure, he also won the Gold Glove Award for AL pitchers—a true all-around season for the then-34-year-old.

The magic didn't carry over entirely into 2025, as Lugo's ERA climbed to 4.15 and his WHIP rose to nearly 1.30 over 26 starts. And so far in 2026, it's been a mixed bag: through nine starts, he owns a 3.76 ERA but a career-worst 1.42 WHIP. Still, reaching 1,000 strikeouts is a reminder of just how effective Lugo has been when it matters most—and a testament to the kind of veteran savvy that makes him a fan favorite in Kansas City.

For Royals fans, seeing Lugo hit this milestone is a bright spot in what has been an up-and-down season. Whether he's starting or coming out of the bullpen, one thing is clear: Seth Lugo knows how to miss bats.
