The 49ers used the 90th overall pick on Indiana running back Kaelon Black, drawing criticism from draft analysts who labeled his third-round selection a reach.

When the San Francisco 49ers selected Indiana running back Kaelon Black with the 90th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the reaction from draft analysts was swift and pointed. Many labeled the third-round selection a reach, questioning whether the team could have found similar value later in the draft.

But if you think that criticism is going to rattle Black, think again. The rookie is embracing the doubt, channeling it into fuel for what he hopes will be a standout debut season.

"It makes me want to go harder," Black told Chase Senior of Chat Sports. "I've got to prove my coach right. I'd be lying if I said I haven't seen the backlash that [Shanahan] has been getting for the pick, but we just stay the course. We stay focused, and we're going to keep moving and try to prove him right."

Both General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have stood firmly behind the pick. "That's just our evaluation of him," Shanahan said recently. "Right or wrong, that's our evaluation."

Black's confidence isn't just talk. After a modest 251-yard rushing campaign for the Hoosiers in 2024, he exploded onto the scene in 2025, becoming one of Indiana's two 1,000-yard backs. He finished the season with 1,040 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, and added 36 receiving yards on four catches.

For a 49ers team that has long valued physical, versatile runners in Shanahan's system, Black's breakout season and unwavering mindset make him a compelling fit. Now, he's ready to show the league that San Francisco's faith in him was no reach at all.
