The Kansas State Wildcats came up just short in a thrilling comeback attempt, falling 4-2 to Cincinnati on Friday night in a hard-fought Big 12 matchup. The loss dropped K-State to 26-23 overall and 9-16 in conference play, while the Bearcats improved to 34-17 and 14-11.
The Wildcats dug themselves an early hole, trailing by two runs after the first two innings. But true to form, K-State showed plenty of fight, battling back to tie the game at 2-2 in the fourth. Ty Smolinski sparked the rally with an RBI double, and Grant Gallagher followed with a game-tying double to right-center field, giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about.
Cincinnati, however, refused to go quietly. The Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI single, then added an insurance run in the ninth to push their advantage to 4-2. Down to their final outs, the Wildcats made one last push, bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. But Shintaro Inoue's fly ball to left field was caught, ending the comeback bid and sealing the series-opening loss for K-State.
While the Wildcats couldn't complete the rally, the game showcased their resilience and ability to battle back from early deficits—a trait that will serve them well as they look to bounce back in the remainder of the series.
