Justin Verlander is inching closer to a return to the mound, and Tigers fans have every reason to be optimistic. The 43-year-old right-hander completed a bullpen session on Wednesday, May 6, without any setbacks, clearing the way for the next critical step in his recovery: facing live hitters for the first time since his March 30 start against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Verlander has been sidelined since April 4 with left hip inflammation, a setback that has kept one of baseball's most durable arms out of action. But after weeks of careful rehab, the future Hall of Famer is feeling like himself again. "I'm feeling good," Verlander said before Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park. "I'm starting the build-up process. I don't know exactly what that looks like, but physically, I'm feeling much better, and mechanically, I'm also feeling much better. Those are good signs."

To take the next step, Verlander will travel with the Tigers for their upcoming road trip, which includes stops against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium (Friday through Sunday) and the New York Mets at Citi Field (Tuesday through Thursday). He's scheduled to throw a live batting practice session during the Royals series, with Tigers hitters stepping into the box. For Verlander, this is a chance to refine his mechanics in a controlled setting—without the pressure of game results. "I'm definitely looking forward to it," he said. "The biggest thing I'm going to focus on is trying to maintain the mechanics that I've been working so diligently on—and having those transfer over to when you're competing. It's nice to face hitters in a non-game atmosphere so you can focus more on yourself and not just on results."

For a pitcher of Verlander's caliber, every step forward is a reminder of the resilience that has defined his career. Whether you're gearing up for his return or just love the game, now is the perfect time to stock up on Tigers gear and celebrate the comeback trail.
