Justin Rose is heading into the PGA Championship with a lot on his mind—and a brand-new set of irons in his bag. The Englishman made a bold mid-season switch to McLaren irons, a move that raised eyebrows across the golf world. But so far, the results haven't matched the hype.
Rose debuted the clubs at Doral's Cadillac Championship, where he finished T65 and actually lost 0.01 strokes to the field on approach. Not exactly the dream start. The following week at Quail Hollow's Truist Championship, he improved slightly to T45, but it's clear the momentum he built heading into The Masters has hit a speed bump since the change.
Still, Rose isn't blaming his tools. In fact, he's doubling down on the decision. Speaking ahead of his first major championship with the McLaren irons, the former U.S. Open champion was quick to defend his new gear.
"I think people make too much of it," Rose said. "I've played so many different sets of irons in the last five years that it's just not a big deal. I've been working on this project for 18 months. It's basically a full wish list of everything I'd want in a set of irons."
Rose emphasized that his recent struggles have nothing to do with the clubs themselves. "The fact I haven't played great the last two weeks has got nothing to do with the irons," he insisted. "I can play great this week with them."
For a player of Rose's caliber, equipment changes are nothing new. But switching clubs in the middle of major season—right after a strong Masters buildup—is a gamble that few pros take. Rose acknowledges the adjustment period, especially when it comes to the visual side of things.
"The testing process is interesting," he explained. "Not until you put something in play do you really have the time to get comfortable with it. It might take a little bit of time to get fully comfortable just looking at something different. But it's been a very measured approach, and I'm really excited about it."
For golf fans and gear enthusiasts alike, this is a fascinating storyline to follow. Whether Rose's McLaren irons become a game-changer or just another chapter in his club-hopping journey, the PGA Championship will be the ultimate test. One thing's for sure: Rose isn't backing down from his decision, and he's ready to let his play do the talking.
