The Jacksonville University women's lacrosse team is back where they belong—the ASUN Championship game. After a rare one-year absence, the No. 2-seeded Dolphins punched their ticket to the title match with a commanding 17-3 victory over No. 3 Liberty on April 30 at Rock Stadium.
The win was a team effort, with Ainsley Scruggs, Maeve Brennan, and Maddi Santini each netting three goals. Scruggs was particularly electric, adding four assists to her stat line. The Dolphins didn't let an hour-long weather delay at halftime cool their momentum, storming back to outscore the Flames 5-0 in the third quarter alone.
This marks the 12th time in school history that JU will compete for the ASUN crown. They'll face top-seeded Delaware in the championship game at 1 p.m. on May 2, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The game will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
The matchup is a rematch of a thriller from March 26, when the Blue Hens edged the Dolphins 14-13 at home. Delaware outscored JU 7-2 in the final 21 minutes to snap the Dolphins' 19-game regular-season conference winning streak. It was a rare blemish for a program that had won six straight ASUN tournament titles before last season's semifinal loss to Coastal Carolina.
But Jacksonville has responded in dominant fashion. Since that loss to Delaware, the Dolphins have won four straight ASUN regular-season games by an average score of 18-5. They carried that momentum into the semifinals, where five different players scored the first five goals to set the tone early. Katie Colavito, Maggie Cuddy, and Scruggs closed out the first half with a flurry, and Brennan took over after the delay with two quick goals in the third quarter.
Now, with a chance to reclaim their throne, the Dolphins are ready for a rematch. Delaware finished the regular season 7-0 in ASUN play, but JU knows what it takes to win on the biggest stage. It's championship or bust for a program that has made this moment its tradition.
