In a move that signals a serious commitment to rebuilding, the JSerra Catholic High School football program in San Juan Capistrano, California, has added another former NFL star to its coaching roster. Over the weekend, the Lions announced via Instagram that former NFL wide receiver Austin Pettis is joining the staff, continuing a trend of bringing pro-level experience to the sidelines.
Pettis, a standout at Orange Lutheran before his collegiate career, made his name at Boise State from 2007 to 2010. He left the Broncos as the program's all-time leader in receptions (229) and touchdown catches (39). His play earned him a third-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, where he went on to play four seasons, hauling in 107 passes for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns.
"JSerra Football is excited to announce the addition of former NFL wide receiver Austin Pettis to our coaching staff," the team's statement read. "Pettis starred at Orange Lutheran before becoming one of the most decorated receivers in Boise State Broncos history."
Pettis joins a staff already stacked with NFL pedigree. The Lions recently hired former NFL linebacker Hardy Nickerson as head coach, a 16-year veteran who led Bishop O'Dowd to a CIF 5-AA state title last season with an 11-4 record. Nickerson has been busy assembling his crew, bringing in former NFL quarterback Steve Beuerlein and defensive back Chris Conte as assistants for the 2026 season.
This infusion of experience comes at a critical time for JSerra. The Lions parted ways with former head coach Victor Santa Cruz after three seasons, during which he posted a 14-18 overall record from 2023 to 2025. The 2025 season was particularly tough, as JSerra was outscored 402-223 and finished 3-12 in the notoriously competitive Trinity League, one of the toughest high school football leagues in the nation.
With Pettis and the new-look coaching staff, the Lions are hoping to turn the tide and bring a winning culture back to San Juan Capistrano.
