Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee endured another frustrating afternoon as his struggles in the Premier League continued, this time in a lackluster performance against Sunderland.

Since arriving at Old Trafford in July 2024, the 24-year-old Dutch striker has failed to live up to expectations. With just nine goals in 73 appearances for the Red Devils—and only two in 24 games this season—his time in Manchester has been anything but prolific.

Given a rare starting opportunity due to Benjamin Sesko's shin injury, Zirkzee was expected to seize the moment. Instead, he cut an isolated figure in attack, unable to influence the game. He lasted 65 minutes before being replaced by Patrick Dorgu, leaving fans and pundits alike questioning his impact.

Statistically, it was a day to forget. Zirkzee managed just one shot—a header from Matheus Cunha's cross that drifted harmlessly over the bar—and failed to register a single shot on target. He completed no dribbles, no key passes, and only 11 passes overall in what can only be described as an anemic display.

The striker's physical battles were equally disappointing. He won just four of 11 duels and was frequently bullied by Sunderland's defense, unable to compete in any tackles. For a forward expected to lead the line, it was a worrying sign of fragility.

Manager Carrick defended his player in the post-match press conference, but the reality is that Zirkzee missed a golden opportunity to prove his worth. With rumors of a summer exit from Old Trafford already circulating, performances like this only strengthen the case for a fresh start—for both the player and the club.
