St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington, the hero of the franchise's 2019 Stanley Cup run, is entering a pivotal offseason with his future in focus. The 32-year-old netminder has one year remaining on his six-year, $36 million contract and is approaching the upcoming season with a clear, yet open-minded, perspective.
Binnington's plans will be shaped by crucial conversations with the Blues' management, particularly incoming General Manager Alexander Steen, a former teammate. "I think 'Steener' and I are going to have some conversations," Binnington said during exit interviews. "I'm a competitive goaltender, right? I love St. Louis. For me, it's just taking care of what's in my control... I believe in myself and in my process. I'm excited to get to work."
This introspection follows a challenging 2023-24 campaign where the statistics told a tough story. Binnington posted a 13-20-7 record with a 3.33 goals-against average and an .873 save percentage, marking career lows in key categories for the veteran. The season was a stark contrast to his legendary rookie performance that culminated in a championship.
"I wouldn’t say it went as planned," Binnington admitted. "There were some highlights... but it’s a year of lessons. Not playing these last couple of months allowed me time to reflect and think about just what my next 3-5 year vision is. It’s exciting."
As the Blues' front office, led by Doug Armstrong and Steen, charts the team's course, Binnington's role and future will be a central storyline. For now, the Cup-winning goalie is focused on his offseason regimen, controlling what he can, and preparing for whatever comes next in his storied St. Louis career.
