Joel Embiid has been ruled out for Game 2 of the Philadelphia 76ers' playoff series against the New York Knicks due to a right ankle sprain and hip soreness, the team announced Wednesday. This is a significant blow to a Sixers squad already trailing 1-0 in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Embiid, who had been receiving treatment for his soreness, was unable to participate in the team's shootaround, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The injury comes at a critical moment for Philadelphia, which looked exhausted and flat in the series opener after a grueling Game 7 victory over Boston just 48 hours earlier. Meanwhile, Jalen Brunson and the Knicks have found their rhythm, playing their best basketball of the postseason.
The 76ers had previously shown resilience in the first round, bouncing back from a Game 1 loss to the Celtics with a road win in Game 2. That turnaround was fueled by a 59-point combined performance from Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, as well as Embiid's return from an appendectomy. Playing through pain, Embiid spoke with NBC Sports Philadelphia's Noah Levick about his mindset: "The one thing about me is I've dealt with a lot of stuff over my career. I don't complain. I just want to give as much as I can every single time I step on the floor... I just want to play basketball, whether I'm in good shape physically, mentally or whatever."
Without their MVP-caliber center, head coach Nick Nurse will rely heavily on Andre Drummond and Adem Bona to fill the void in the paint. For the 76ers, this is a test of depth and determination as they look to even the series on the road.
