Minnesota should look to move on from this veteran righty this year.

The Minnesota Twins are staring down another trade deadline fire-sale, but this season could look very different from last. Instead of clearing the shelves with a wave of smaller moves, the Twins might be preparing to part with two of their biggest stars: Byron Buxton and Joe Ryan.

According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Ryan has emerged as a highly sought-after trade candidate—and that's no surprise for the All-Star right-hander. "The 29-year-old should be one of the more sought-after trade targets this summer," Bowden writes. "A lot of teams will be monitoring his health status closely the next few weeks."

And those medicals are exactly why the Twins should act now. Ryan is under club control through the 2027 season, giving Minnesota an extra year of leverage. But holding onto him could be a costly gamble. With his current injury history drawing intense scrutiny from rival clubs, the risk of a setback is real—and the window to maximize his trade value is narrowing fast.

If Ryan is healthy enough to pitch by the August 3 trade deadline, the Twins should strike while the iron is hot. Bowden notes that interest will be high, and with just a year and a half of control remaining, Minnesota would be wise to cash in for a significant return rather than risk losing him to free agency after 2027 with little to show for it.

For a team in sell mode, the math is simple: trade Ryan now, secure a haul of prospects, and avoid watching another star walk out the door for nothing. The Twins won't get a better opportunity than this.
