Joao Fonseca kicked off his 2026 Munich Open campaign with a hard-fought victory, navigating both a tough opponent and tricky conditions to defeat Alejandro Tabilo 7-6, 6-3.
The young Brazilian showcased impressive resilience, adapting his game to the chilly Munich weather better than his Chilean counterpart. After a tight first set, Fonseca found his rhythm and played with increasing freedom to secure the straight-sets win.
Speaking after the match, Fonseca was candid about the physical challenge. "It was a little bit cold, so I needed a good warm-up to stay alive," he admitted. "Even in the breaks, my hand was freezing, but I’m happy with the fight today."
He emphasized the constant adaptation required on the ATP Tour, especially coming from the warmer clay of Monte Carlo. "Every week is a different surface, different type of clay, altitude here, different weather. You have one or two days to adapt... Whoever adapts better is going to have better results."
His reward is a second-round clash with a familiar foe: France's Arthur Rinderknech. Fonseca recently bested him in three sets en route to the Monte Carlo quarter-finals. "He’s serving pretty well. Here at altitude, it’s difficult," Fonseca noted, before adding confidently, "I’m very confident and playing good tennis, so I’m ready."
At just 19 years old, Fonseca is already building a formidable résumé with two ATP titles and a career-high ranking of World No. 24. After shaking off a slow start to the season, his strong showings at Indian Wells and Monte Carlo signal he's back on track and ready to make more noise on the clay.
