It's awkward, to say the least, when the owner of an NFL team in one market owns a sports team in another market.

When an NFL team owner also holds a stake in a team from another market, things can get complicated. That's the reality for Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, who is now stepping up his involvement with the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks—a move that has fans and analysts watching closely.

Haslam recently appeared at a press conference introducing the Bucks' new head coach, Taylor Jenkins, and made it clear his role with the basketball team is expanding. "Do I think we'll be here more? I do," Haslam said, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer. It was his first public address as a member of the Bucks' ownership group, and it came with some intriguing comments about the team's future—including the uncertain status of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. "We don't know whether Giannis will stay with us or not, but we'll work through that with Giannis in the coming weeks," Haslam noted, via the Associated Press.

This dual-ownership dynamic is always a balancing act. In Cleveland, pro teams typically support each other, even as they compete for the same fans' attention and dollars. But every owner has only so much bandwidth. The more time Haslam devotes to the Bucks, the less he'll have for the Browns—and, frankly, that might not be a bad thing for Cleveland.

Haslam has consistently denied meddling in Browns football operations, but it's hard to ignore the fingerprints on some of the franchise's biggest missteps over his 14-year tenure. From drafting Johnny Manziel in the first round, to the failed analytics experiment under Paul DePodesta, to the controversial tanking strategy that led to the infamous 2022 trade—widely considered one of the worst in NFL history—the Browns have made plenty of headlines for the wrong reasons.

For now, Haslam's attention is split between two very different sports worlds. Whether that shift helps the Browns find their footing remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: in the game of ownership, where you invest your time matters just as much as where you invest your money.
