Dayton announced that former women's basketball coach Jim Jabir, who guided the Flyers to the Elite Eight in 2015, has died after a cancer battle.

The world of women's college basketball has lost a true competitor and program builder. Jim Jabir, the longtime coach who led the University of Dayton Flyers to unprecedented heights, has passed away at 63 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. The university's athletics department confirmed the news, marking the end of a storied career that left a permanent mark on the sport.

Jabir's legacy is cemented by a remarkable coaching career spanning over 500 Division I victories, but his crowning achievement came in 2015. That season, he masterfully guided the Dayton Flyers on a Cinderella run deep into the NCAA Tournament, a feat that remains the benchmark for the program.

After a tough loss in the Atlantic 10 championship game, Jabir's seventh-seeded Flyers, powered by stars like Andrea Hoover and Ally Malott, caught fire in March. They orchestrated a stunning series of upsets, taking down Iowa State, Kentucky, and Louisville to crash the Elite Eight—the only time in school history Dayton has advanced to the tournament's second weekend.

Their magical run finally met its match against a historically great UConn team led by Geno Auriemma. Even in a 91-70 defeat, Jabir's squad proved its mettle, becoming just the third team that year to score 70 points against the dominant Huskies. That 2015 tournament was the pinnacle of a six-year streak of NCAA appearances under Jabir's leadership, a period that defined an era of excellence for Dayton basketball.

"On behalf of the University of Dayton and the women's basketball program, we mourn the passing of former head coach Jim Jabir," said Athletics Director Neil Sullivan. "We offer our most heartfelt prayers and condolences to his wife, Angie, and the entire Jabir family." For those in Dayton and across the basketball community, Coach Jabir will be remembered not just for the wins, but for building a team that played with heart, resilience, and a fearless spirit—qualities that define greatness both on and off the court.
