As the New York Jets kick off their rookie minicamp this weekend, the energy is electric. For the first time, the team's eight draft picks and 11 undrafted free agents will step onto the practice field, eager to prove their worth. But before the action began, General Manager Darren Mougey made some key roster moves to set the stage.

In a trio of transactions, the Jets waived offensive lineman Gus Hartwig and defensive back Chris Smith II, while designating defensive lineman Paschal Ekeji as their exempt/international player. This special designation means Ekeji won't count toward the 90-man roster, giving the team some extra flexibility.

Ekeji's journey is a fascinating one. Initially signed to the Jets' practice squad in November, the former rugby star inked a reserve/future contract in January. Holding citizenship in three countries, he was one of 13 players selected through the NFL's International Pathway Program. At Jets practice, he'll continue honing his raw skills without occupying a precious roster spot—a smart move for a player with untapped potential.

On the other hand, Hartwig's departure signals a shift in the Jets' plans. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Purdue last year, he was waived/injured in July and missed his entire rookie season. Despite starting 45 games at center in college, the Jets have clearly moved on from developing the former Boilermaker.

Smith's case is particularly intriguing. A high-profile prospect from Georgia, he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders but struggled to find his footing. The Jets claimed him off waivers in December, but after a closer look, they decided not to keep him on the 90-man offseason roster.

With these moves, the Jets are streamlining their roster for rookie minicamp, focusing on fresh talent and international growth. It's a strategic start to what promises to be an exciting weekend of football development.
