The New York Jets have already seen enough of their newest rookie—just six days after bringing him on board.
The team signed undrafted free-agent kicker Will Ferrin out of BYU on May 8, part of a 12-player UDFA class following the 2026 NFL Draft. Ferrin participated in the team's rookie minicamp from May 8-10, but his time with Gang Green was short-lived. According to the New York Post's Brian Costello, the Jets are waiving Ferrin on Wednesday, clearing a roster spot for veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick.
Ferrin was one of three kickers competing for the starting job in New York, alongside Cade York and Lenny Krieg. The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt noted that Ferrin's performance during practice didn't help his case: "He did miss a couple FGs at the rookie camp practice we saw him kicking at—but I thought he'd at least get a shot to compete for the job."
During his three-year career at BYU, Ferrin posted an 81.7% field goal success rate and made 122 of 123 extra points. But in the NFL, especially with a team in flux, every rep counts—and his didn't add up fast enough.
The Jets have had their share of struggles in recent seasons, but reliable kicking was one bright spot. Last year, veteran Nick Folk was a standout, converting 28 of 29 field goals with seven makes from 50 yards or more. But Folk signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2026, leaving New York in a bind. That's why the team brought in competition, but now that race is down to York and Krieg—neither of whom is a lock.
York has 23 games of NFL experience, starting for the Cleveland Browns in 2022 but hitting just 75% of his field goals that season. Since then, he's bounced around, and Krieg has yet to prove himself at the pro level. For Jets fans hoping for stability, the kicking game remains very much up in the air.
