The New York Jets endured a frustrating first season under head coach Aaron Glenn, parting ways with four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers and bringing in Justin Fields. In an ironic twist, Rodgers led the Steelers to an AFC North title while Fields and the Jets struggled with one of the league's most lackluster offenses.
Now, Fields has moved on to back up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, and the Jets have turned to a familiar face: Geno Smith. The former West Virginia standout is returning to the franchise where his NFL journey began, and his new offensive coordinator, Frank Reich, couldn't be more optimistic.
"I think he fits perfect. I've liked Geno from day one," Reich said during a press conference. "When he was coming out of West Virginia, I had a high grade on him. I hadn't met him before now, and I'm even more impressed in person."
Reich highlighted Smith's resilience as a key asset. "The No. 1 attribute in any quarterback, especially when you're trying to turn things around, is toughness—mentally and physically. I feel that from Geno on every front."
Smith's journey has been a rollercoaster, from his early days with the Jets to a career resurgence in Seattle and a tough stint in Las Vegas last season. But Reich believes those experiences have shaped him into a stronger leader. "If you're the right kind of leader, you come out of it better. I think we're getting the best version of Geno Smith, and his best football is ahead of him."
For Jets fans, the hope is that Smith can recapture the form that made him a Pro Bowler and lead an offense that desperately needs a spark. With Reich's confidence and Smith's veteran savvy, the pieces may finally be falling into place.
