Louisville women's basketball is making a major power play this offseason, with head coach Jeff Walz bolstering his staff with serious experience. The Cardinals announced Tuesday the addition of two former head coaches: Joanna Bernabei-McNamee, formerly of Boston College, and Mike Bradbury, the longtime leader at New Mexico.

This strategic hire fills the voids left by assistants Shay Robinson and Amanda Butler, who departed for Florida and the College of Charleston, respectively. For Walz and Bernabei-McNamee, it's a full-circle moment. The two were part of Maryland's national championship-winning staff in 2006, forging a bond that has now led to a reunion in Louisville.

"Having shared that experience, I’ve seen firsthand the level of preparation, passion and basketball IQ she brings every single day," Walz said in a statement. "There’s a trust and familiarity there that you can’t manufacture, and I know she’ll make an immediate impact on our program."

Bernabei-McNamee brings a wealth of experience, including a successful eight-year run at Boston College where she earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2020. Her journey back to Walz's side underscores the value of deep-rooted coaching connections in building a championship culture.

Joining her is Mike Bradbury, a veteran with 19 years of head coaching experience. At New Mexico, he built a consistent winner, amassing a 202-112 record, securing six 20-win seasons, and earning Mountain West Coach of the Year honors in 2024. His proven track record of program development adds another layer of elite expertise to the Cardinals' bench.

For a Louisville program with perennial Final Four aspirations, this isn't just a staff shuffle—it's a statement. By bringing in two seasoned leaders with proven success, Jeff Walz is clearly arming his team with the strategic minds needed to compete at the highest level. It's a move that signals the Cardinals are reloading, not rebuilding, as they chase the ultimate prize.
