Trading for Luka was also sentimental for Governor Jeanie Buss because of a Lakers legend. It was hidden from the players involved, and even the Lakers ‘ de facto leader LeBron James, had no idea about it.

When the Lakers pulled off one of the most shocking trades in NBA history to acquire Luka Dončić, it wasn't just a blockbuster move—it was deeply personal for team Governor Jeanie Buss. In a candid interview on Maria Sharapova's podcast "Pretty Tough," Buss revealed the sentimental reasons behind the trade and the incredible secrecy that surrounded it.

The trade, which sent Anthony Davis to the Mavericks and brought Dončić to Los Angeles, was kept so confidential that even the players involved—including LeBron James—had no idea it was happening. "Nobody knew," Buss admitted. "Including Luka and Anthony Davis, and LeBron James. We had a game in New York that night, so the coach knew that this was going to happen, but he still had to play the game, and we won the game that night."

Head coach JJ Redick, who was the only person in the Lakers organization outside of the front office to know about the trade, later recalled the immense pressure of keeping such a monumental secret while preparing for a game. He described feeling visibly stressed and "carrying a lot" while in the team hotel's steam room that night.

For Buss, the trade carried an emotional weight that went far beyond basketball strategy. She revealed that her connection to Dončić began through Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. "I had never met Luka. He was someone special to me because the last night that I saw Kobe alive was about a month before he passed. He brought his daughter, Gigi, to see Luka play because Luka was Gigi's favorite player. So, I always had a soft spot in my heart for Luka because of that, and never in a million years thought he would become available, that he could become a Laker."

Dončić's admiration for Bryant is well-documented—the Slovenian superstar has long described Kobe as a childhood idol and a significant inspiration. The bond between them grew when Bryant famously spoke Slovenian to Dončić in 2019, creating a special moment that deepened their connection. Even after Bryant's tragic passing, Dončić has continued to honor his memory, including donating funds last year to restore a vandalized mural of Kobe and Gianna.

Since arriving in Los Angeles, Dončić has made a strong impression on Buss beyond the sentimental connection. "He's just been terrific to work with, and I think he's come back with a purpose of wanting to win a championship for this team," she said, signaling that the Lakers' new era is built on both heart and ambition.
